To some degree, everyone wants to be a rock star. Seriously, who hasn’t had at least a passing temptation to throw a television out the hotel window because, you know, Led Zeppelin did it? Especially when you’re young, being the wild and crazy party animal among your friends seems like an instant way to gain popularity and adoration. The problem is, not all rock stars have the luck and longevity of Keith Richards, and if you try to emulate his lifestyle, you’ll probably end up dead like John Bonham instead. Or Jimi Hendrix. Or Janis Joplin. Or Kurt Cobain. That’s not to say we all need to live like the Jonas Brothers and abstain completely, but it’s worthwhile to realize that those special nights out are best remembered for the company and camaraderie you shared, rather than forgotten as the result of chemically induced amnesia.

The Opening Act

So you’ve nailed down the perfect outfit, got your new ‘do, and smell like a million bucks. But don’t head out on the town before your body is as finely tuned as Clapton’s Fender® Stratocaster.

Rest! If you get less than 4 hours of sleep per night, or you’ve been up for 16 hours or more, you’re probably already acting drunk, even before you’ve had a drop of alcohol. This is because not getting enough REM sleep negatively affects your body’s motor functions, blood sugar absorption, and immune system. You’ll be friendlier, wittier, and more sociable with all your friends when you’re rested, and this might come in handy if you’re looking for a new type of friend (or two, if you really want to love like a rock star . . . ).

Eat well! Van Halen ate M&Ms® (except the brown ones, according to their notorious concert contract rider), Busta Rhymes eats KFC®, and Meat Loaf, circa 1970s, ate pretty much everything under the sun, except his namesake. If you want to eat right, you probably want to follow another direction. Ideally, you should eat healthy meals that include a balance of carbohydrates (from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains), protein (from lean meats and fish, legumes, nuts, soy, and dairy products), and fats (avoiding saturated and trans fats). A solid meal will help stave off the urge for that 1 AM pilgrimage to the taco truck with your less-well-fed friends. And remember, eating right doesn’t need to be a solo venture. If you really want to seem hip and in the know, bring your friends to the latest trendy, new “foodie” haven before hitting the bars and clubs. That way, you’ll all spend a few hours focused on cuisine instead of cocktails. Know that thrill you get from discovering a new underground band? Well, most people feel the same way about finding a great new restaurant before the masses, so choose wisely and your friends will bestow upon you admiration comparable to what Justin Timberlake receives in a room full of Hollywood starlets.

The Headliner

This is it. The main event. The moment the crowd has been waiting for all night. It’s time to shine, so here’s how to ensure the lighters (or iPhones® with lighter apps) come out, and you walk off stage a legend:

Dance, dance, dance! We all know that half an hour of cardio per day is an essential component of staying healthy and fit, so combine it with your night out and kill two birds with one stone! Dancing is wonderful exercise, and is sure to work up a sweat. If you’re worried your moves are less Michael Jackson and more Elaine from Seinfeld, why not try joining a group hip-hop class or try out Hip Hop Abs® to learn some funky, fresh moves you can bust out for your friends? (But if you really want to impress them, you should probably never utter the words “funky” and “fresh” in the same sentence.)

Moderation! If moderation isn’t a scientific law, it really should be, because there’s almost no situation where it doesn’t work. Many rock stars may overdo it with the partying every night, but they have expensive publicists to explain away their stints in rehab as “exhaustion.” To increase your shelf life as a party animal, stay properly hydrated. Every great rock song has a memorable chorus, so when you head out for a night on the town, keep this little ditty on repeat in your head: “Drink, water, drink, water, drink, water.” If it helps, just hum that Chumbawumba “Tubthumping” song and substitute water every other line (i.e., alternate your cocktails with water). You might think that getting drunk early will make you seem cool and fun throughout the night, but in all honesty, you’re only becoming that guy or girl.

“I’ll have a soda and soda, please.” The great thing about spirits like vodka or gin is that they look like water. So the next time your friends are urging you to catch up or it’s your turn to buy a round, slow things down by sipping on a soda water—just let everybody think it’s liquor. You can even wince when you take a sip if you really want to crank up the illusion that you’re hitting the hard stuff. No one will be the wiser, and you’ll save a pretty penny too! Little-known fact: The original title of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice” was just “Juice,” but the record label urged him to change it for fear it would lower his “gangsta” cred.

Energy doesn’t come in a can. If you’re looking for “wings,” don’t go for a Red Bull®, just buy a Paul McCartney album. Avoid the temptation to use energy drinks as fuel, because “energy” is a complete misnomer here. The caffeine and sugar hit’ll just leave you jittery and nervous, after which you’ll risk pulling a Lindsay Lohan and crashing hard before the end of the night.

The After Party

It’s the next day, and you’re not sure how to follow up that awesome night you just had. Here are a few suggestions for how to get your groove back:

Rest! Again! Whaddya know, we’re right back where we started—your own cozy bed. Hopefully, you spent the night with the Captain to your Tennille. (A dated reference, I know, but who doesn’t sing along to “Love Will Keep Us Together”? Admit it.) Anyway, if all went according to plan, you spent the night dancing, romancing, and, well, other things, so now it’s time to rest up. Don’t worry about your workout today, because trust me, you did enough of that last night. If you’re feeling extra sluggish, some light stretching or a leisurely walk should do the trick.

Recovery! Eminem’s new album is called Recovery, and we don’t think it’s a coincidence. He’s giving you a hint, so take it! Buy some of Beachbody’s own Results and Recovery Formula™. Designed for use after workouts, it will get your body back in tour shape in no time.

There you have it, the official guide to living a Beachbody-certified rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. If you heed our advice, both your body and your mind will remain solid as a rock for quite a while, and you won’t get caught rolling onto the floor.

This is an article from a professional who teaches for one the most respected kettlebell training communities in the country. It was written by Dr. Mark Cheng in response to some of his students and peers who were questioning his vocal support of Shakeology. Dr. Cheng gave us permission to reprint it here.

Lately, I’ve made mention about my use of the nutritional product Shakeology, and some folks have been questioning if I’ve abandoned the RKC ranks and gone “P90X” on them. So let me set the record straight . . . definitively . . . once and for all.

I heard about Shakeology before there WAS a Shakeology, directly from the mouth of its inventor—Isabelle Brousseau. The wife of Beachbody CEO Carl Daikeler, Ms. Brousseau is a singularly talented coach and highly educated researcher. She’s spent years studying the advanced principles of elite human performance from authorities around the world, and I was honored to have the chance to share Pavel Tsatsouline’s Hardstyle RKC kettlebell training method privately with her. As an adept student, she was on the fast track to preparing for her RKC instructor certification when she decided to take time off upon learning she was expecting her first child.

During the times I spent training her, Isabelle and I spoke about Chinese herbal medicine, and she mentioned she was researching ways of combining all-natural foods with the highest possible nutrient values into a meal-replacement shake designed for athletes and people-on-the-go. When she mentioned wanting to put in high quality ayurvedic herbs, Chinese herbs, antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, prebiotics, and a host of other vitamins and minerals, my initial reaction was, “Yeah, right!”

My doubts were not unfounded. Having spent years studying (and consuming) Chinese herbal medicines, I had a familiarity with a good deal of what Brousseau was talking about. The ingredients she’d mentioned sounded like a wish list that only insiders would know of and only the filthy rich and well-connected could afford. On top of that, the taste of such a mixture, I surmised, would probably make even the least sensitive tasters wretch with disgust. To make a mixture that would contain the type of ingredients she mentioned, be stable enough to ship and store, and not taste like the bottom skim of a Los Angeles sewer was a pipe dream as far as I was concerned. So I filed the conversation away in my mental round file. A couple of years later, when I met with Carl to discuss a project idea, I saw the finished product on his shelf. Eager to see how far from the initial ideal the finished product had to compromise, I was in for a shock.

Not only did Shakeology have EXACTLY the type of ingredients that Isabelle had mentioned during our training sessions, but it had MORE!

Some notables:

Astragalus: widely used in Chinese medicine as an immune system regulator

MSM: one of the most popular supplements for joint health

Chia: the Mayan super-seed with more calcium than whole milk, more omega-3 and -6 than salmon, and more protein than kidney beans

THREE different proprietary blends and some vitamins and minerals that actually exceeded the U.S. RDA.

This stuff looked like it was fit for a king for sure. So I was curious to put it to the final 2 tests: taste and performance. I wanted to know if it smelled or tasted anything like what I thought it would and was curious if it’d make a difference for my high-velocity, high-output, high-mileage lifestyle.

A little background: I’m a caffeine junkie by virtue of workaholism. Ever since discovering the “joy” of all-nighter homework sessions in high school, I became keenly aware of the value of being able to work harder and sacrifice sleep. So when the NoDoz, Vivarin, and Mountain Dew lifestyle needed an adult turn after I’d graduated and started writing, teaching, treating patients, travelling, training, and trying to spend time with my family, I dove hip deep into energy drinks like Red Bull, Monster, and caffeinated energy bars like Pit Bull. When I speak well about a nutritional product, it’s for one reason: it helps me get my work done while keeping me healthy. Another bit of background: I’m a glutton. I love food, especially food that tastes good. I never met a filet mignon that I didn’t like, and never met one that I didn’t like better wrapped in bacon, with a side of bacon-wrapped scallops, and mashed potatoes—topped with bacon. If it doesn’t taste good, I don’t care how good it is for me. I’ll STILL probably not like it well enough to be disciplined about taking it.

The Greenberry Shakeology bag that Carl gave me turned my ball of preconceived notions and stood it on its ear. From the moment I opened the bag, the scent was wonderful, like a dessert that you’re eager to tear into. So I dumped some ice and water into the blender and dropped a scoop of the bright green powder in with it. I didn’t add juice or other fruits because I wanted to know exactly how this tasted by itself, unadulterated. The next sound I heard after taking my first sip was, “Yum!” It passed the taste test.

Next was the travel test. I wanted to see how it kept me going while traveling, so instead of my usual chain-drinking habit of Monster or Red Bull, I tried a shake or two during the day, usually with one in the morning. I brought Shakeology with me to New York, New Mexico, and most recently to Australia to see how I’d do with it, and the results were remarkable. I had sustained, stable energy, but without the jitters, aggression, and hard drops afterwards. When I travel, I travel to teach, and I have to be up, energetic, strong, and focused. My days here in LA revolve around teaching, training, treating patients, and trying to steal moments with my family. So if something doesn’t give me the energy to do what I need, I can’t waste my precious time or hard-earned money with it.

Shakeology has proven itself to be able to give me all of that on multiple occasions, both while traveling and here in Los Angeles. You can draw your own conclusions about any product you want, but I’m sharing my experiences with Shakeology here openly. And if you think I’m endorsing it only for financial gain, you couldn’t be more wrong. I signed up as a “Coach” so I could buy the product for myself! If you want to try it, you know where to find it, and get ready to be surprised how little such high-quality nutrition costs!

If you’re looking for a scapegoat in the obesity epidemic, look no further than soda. It’s the single greatest caloric source in the world, accounting for somewhere between 11 and 19 percent of all the calories consumed worldwide. It’s cheap, addictive, and readily available, which generally means that it will take some willpower to avoid. But don’t despair, as we at Beachbody® are here to help. We present: our top 10 reasons to give up soda. Drum roll please . . .

Soda may cause cancer. According to a report in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, consuming two or more soft drinks per week increased the risk of developing pancreatic cancer by nearly twofold compared to individuals who did not consume soft drinks. As reported, the study “followed 60,524 men and women in the Singapore Chinese Health Study for 14 years. During that time, there were 140 pancreatic cancer cases. Those who consumed two or more soft drinks per week (averaging five per week) had an 87 percent increased risk compared with individuals who did not.”Then why, you’re probably asking yourself, is this number ten on our list and why is soda even still on the shelf? Not that I’d challenge the ability of such large corporate power to hide such a thing but, in this case, the study slit its own throat. As one of the researchers noted, “soft drink consumption in Singapore was associated with several other adverse health behaviors such as smoking and red meat intake, which we can’t accurately control for,” meaning that we have no way of knowing, for sure, if soda was the culprit. Still, it doesn’t hurt to know that when you drink soda it lumps you into a fairly unhealthy user group.1

It’s not just about calories. Calories grab headlines, but recent science is showing that diet soda users are still in the crosshairs. A 2005 study by the University of Texas Health Science Center showed that there’s a 41 percent increased risk of being obese—and a 65 percent increased risk of becoming overweight during the next 7 or 8 years—for every can of diet soda a person consumes in a day. Admittedly, this one should be higher on the list, but I wanted to make sure the article-skimming crowd knew the score up front: that diet sodas are very much a part of the problem.

It’s the water . . . and a lot more. Okay, so that was a beer slogan, but soda is also made up mainly of water, and when you’re slinging as much of it as they are, and you need to sling it cheap, sometimes you can’t help but run into problems with your supply chain. In India, Coca-Cola® has found itself in hot water, and not the kind they thought they were purchasing rights to. Two of their factories have been closed, but one continues to run amok. According to a report in The Ecologist, “They accuse the company of over-extracting groundwater, lowering the water tables and leaving farmers and the local community unable to dig deep enough to get to vital water supplies.”"Since the bottling plant was opened in 2000, water levels in the area have dropped six metres, and when a severe drought hit the region earlier this year the crops failed and livelihoods were destroyed.”2

BPA: not just for water bottles anymore. Nalgene® and other water bottle companies took the heat when the dangers of bisphenol A (BPA) were made public a couple years back. While these companies went to great lengths to save their businesses, the soda companies somehow flew under the radar and continue to use it in their products. A recent Canadian study has found that BPA exists “in the vast majority” of the soft drinks tested. Most of these were under the national limits set for toxicity, but some were not. And remember how much soda the average person consumes, meaning odds are most soda consumers are at some risk.”Out of 72 drinks tested, 69 were found to contain BPA at levels below what Health Canada says is the safe upper limit. However, studies in peer-reviewed science journals have indicated that even at very low doses, BPA can increase breast and ovarian cancer cell growth and the growth of some prostate cancer cells in animals.”3

Can convenience. As in the 1950s colloquial: can it. Speaking of the 1950s, those were the happy days when most of our soda was consumed at soda fountains, obesity was a term hardly anyone had heard of, and the most feared epidemic was one of atomically mutated insects taking over the world. Now instead of hoofing it down to the corner confectionery for one soda, we fill out trucks with pallets of shrink-wrapped cans or bottles and quaff the stuff by the six-pack. Not to mention how out of balance this ensures our diets will become, it wreaks havoc on the world around us. The bottled-water industry (which is mostly owned by the soda industry) famously uses 17 million barrels of oil a year, and the aluminum industry uses as much electricity as the entire continent of Africa. Not only that, aluminum mining accounts for a ton of toxic chemicals that is left behind for every ton of the metal produced.4

The Frankenfood factor. Whether you consume diet or regular soda, you’re getting all of the genetically modified food you need and more, via high fructose corn syrup or aspartame. Both of these are under plenty of scientific as well as anecdotal scrutiny. Findings aren’t pretty but, so far, this multibillion-dollar industry has kept these sweeteners on the shelves while alternative sweeteners meeting cost requirements are explored. Since it’s almost impossible to read health headlines without finding one of these ingredients in some type of controversy, I’ll just use one example:”The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a nutrition and food safety advocacy group, called on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to review the claims, which stem from research conducted by the European Ramazzini Foundation in Italy.

The foundation reported that rats who consumed aspartame in exceedingly large quantities were more likely to develop cancer. CSPI executive director Michael Jacobson considers this an important finding that should not be overlooked.” 5

I know, there I go again with the cancer. But some people need to be shocked in order to take action. For me, seeing the Diet Coke® and Mentos® experiment was all I needed to swear off the stuff.

Foreign news cares how much soda we sell in our schools. How bad is your country’s problem when the whole world is watching its daily actions? “Nearly one in three children and teenagers in the U.S. are overweight or obese and health experts say sugary drinks are part of the problem.” Yep, bad. The world is well aware of the problems soda is causing and is looking to us to lead. And we certainly are trying. Are you with the program?”Under the voluntary guidelines, in place since 2006, full-calorie soft drinks were removed from school canteens and vending machines. Lighter drinks, including low-fat milk, diet sodas, juices, flavoured waters and teas were promoted in their place.”6

And, while great and all, it appears that no one got the memo about diet sodas.

Diet? Um, that’s just like your opinion, man. When it comes to soda, treat the word “diet” as a slogan. A study at Boston University’s School of Medicine linked diet soda with increased risk factors for heart disease and diabetes. To be more specific, the study “found adults who drink one or more sodas a day had about a 50 percent higher risk of metabolic syndrome,” which is a cluster of risk factors such as excessive fat around the waist, low levels of “good” cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other symptoms that lead to heart disease and/or diabetes. And, for those of you only concerned about how you look in the mirror, “Those who drank one or more soft drinks a day had a 31 percent greater risk of becoming obese.”

Soda outkills terrorists. A study out of the University of California, San Francisco, shows that soda has killed at least 6,000 Americans in the last decade. From ABC News: “The new analysis, presented Friday at the American Heart Association’s 50th Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention, offers a picture of just how horrifying the damage done by excess consumption of sugary drinks can be.

Using a computer model and data from the Framingham Heart Study, the Nurses Health Study and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, researchers estimated that the escalating consumption between 1990 and 2000 of soda and sugar-sweetened beverages, which they abbreviated as ‘SSBs,’ led to 75,000 new cases of diabetes and 14,000 new cases of coronary heart disease.

What’s more, the burden of the diseases translated into a $300 million to $550 million increase in health care costs between 2000 and 2010.”7

It’s the “real thing” . . . not exactly. Should having the number one caloric source in the world come from something that’s entirely manmade be a metaphor for a dying world? It doesn’t have to be this way. After all, there’s nothing in soda that we need. In fact, there’s nothing in soda that even comes from the earth except caffeine, and that’s optional. It’s a mixture of altered water (injected with carbon dioxide gas), artificial flavors (yes, “natural flavor” is artificial), artificial color, and phosphoric acid, along with its sole caloric source that is a by-product of genetically modified corn production and offers virtually no nutritional value. It’s about as real as The Thing.

By incorporating these six pack abs foods into your diet you will help ensure that you're eating properly and eating so that you can see the results you're looking for. Always keep in mind that total calories are important for getting your body to burn off body fat, so that must be carefully considered as well.

If you’re looking to get six pack abs, following the right type of diet will be one of the most important things you must do. Regardless of how hard you’re working in the gym, if you’re not feeding your body the proper foods at the right time of the day, results will elude you. It’s very easy to eat far too many calories in a short period of time if you make the wrong selections and that will completely derail your process.

The following are five of the foods you must start eating now if you want to be guaranteed your set of six pack abs.

Egg Whites

If you’re looking for a fast, convenient, cheap source of protein, egg whites are it. Whether you want to whip these up into an omelet or have them scrambled, they are 100% pure protein and will help you meet your daily needs.

Egg whites are also a food source of protein that is digested more rapidly in the body so if you’re looking for an alternative to protein powder this would be a good option.

Oatmeal

The second six pack abs food to add to your diet regularly is oatmeal. As far as slow digesting, high fiber carbohydrate sources go, nothing is better than oatmeal. Be sure you purchase plain oats though otherwise you will get a lot more sugar and calories than you bargained for.

Ideally you should have this carbohydrate source at times in the day when you are most active since its then that your body will need the extra fuel.

Salmon

Getting a good intake of essential fatty acids each day is important in your quest for six pack abs. Salmon is a great way to achieve this goal and will also supply you with much needed protein.

Salmon is higher in calories ounce for ounce compared with other protein sources such as chicken breast, so just be sure you work these calories into your daily total so you still stay on track to lose fat off the abs.

Broccoli

Broccoli is a great vegetable to eat while trying to obtain six pack abs because it’s very low in calories, high in fiber, and contains plenty of antioxidants that will help you maintain good health. Ideally you should have your broccoli steamed or stir-fried with some low-calorie sauce because if you prepare it using butter or cheese sauce it goes from being a top-notch six pack abs food to one that will likely cause fat gain.

Broccoli does tend to cause gas or bloating in some individuals though so add this one to your diet slowly so you can see how it impacts you.

Blueberries

Finally the last food to start having on a regular basis is blueberries. Blueberries are known for being an antioxidant powerhouse and will quickly kick your health level into high gear. At only fifty calories per half cup they are an easy addition to your diet by tossing some in your morning bowl of oatmeal, stirring a couple into some yogurt, or blending them with your protein shake before a workout.

By incorporating these six pack abs foods into your diet you will help ensure that you’re eating properly and eating so that you can see the results you’re looking for. Always keep in mind that total calories are important for getting your body to burn off body fat, so that must be carefully considered as well.

When you’re trying to lose excess fat, every advantage helps. Of course, your main tools are an effective exercise program, a proper food plan, and supplements that fit your lifestyle. But beyond those basics, anything that can boost your results is a plus.

Luckily, you probably have some safe, effective, and inexpensive fat burners in your kitchen already. Include the following items in your diet plan, and you can start losing more weight right now—without even making an extra trip to the store.

Apple cider vinegar. While cider vinegar may not be the magic remedy your great-grandmother thought it was, there is increasing evidence showing that it can help you eat less and reduce the effect that carbs have on your body. The active ingredient, acetic acid, appears to improve insulin sensitivity and slow the absorption of carbohydrates, helping prevent blood-sugar spikes and excess fat storage. It can also make you feel fuller with less food. In a recent study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, mice on a high-fat diet gained up to 10 percent less fat if they were given acetic acid than if they were given only water.

Uses

Mix vinegar with extra virgin olive oil and your favorite spices for a simple, healthful, and delicious salad dressing. In a Penn State University study, women who ate large, low-calorie salads before lunch ended up consuming 100 fewer calories during the meal itself . . . and they loaded up on extra nutrients as well.

Combine vinegar with oil and herbs to make a tenderizing meat marinade.

Add a splash of vinegar to top off soups or stews; this will brighten up the flavors.

Add a tablespoon of vinegar before boiling, steaming, or stir-frying vegetables to bring out their fresh tastes and help them hold their colors.

Cinnamon. This common spice has been found in several studies to help improve insulin sensitivity and regulate blood sugar, so it helps prevent the spikes and dips that can cause food cravings. This effect may be due to healthful antioxidant chemicals known as polyphenols. Keep in mind that most grocery-store brands of “cinnamon” are actually cassia bark, a close-tasting relative of the cinnamon plant. (If you want the real thing, look for “true” or Ceylon cinnamon on the label.) Both varieties seem to have health benefits, but be careful about using cassia in large amounts—it contains coumarin, which acts as a blood thinner and may cause liver problems when taken in high doses.

Uses

Add powdered cinnamon to hot or cold cereal, fruit, sweet foods, and even savory dishes such as curry or chili.

For cinnamon-flavored coffee, mix a little into your grounds before brewing.

Heat a cinnamon stick in water, apple cider, or even red wine for a spicy hot drink.

Hot sauce and red pepper flakes. The active ingredient in hot peppers, capsaicin, creates thermogenesis; that is, it temporarily turns up your body’s thermostat. Studies have shown that people who eat pepper-laced food get a small metabolic boost, and burn more fat, for up to half an hour afterward. Hot food also makes you feel full more quickly, so you’re likely to eat less.Hot sauce and red pepper flakes are great flavor boosters, too, adding zest to meals with few extra calories. You don’t need to ladle it on till there are flames coming out of your ears. A little bit will go a long way.

Uses

Add a few drops of pepper sauce to anything that needs spicing up, including eggs, soups, seafood, and even frozen dinners. (These sauces can be high in sodium, so go easy on the shaker.)

Sprinkle red pepper flakes on pizza, pasta, or sandwiches, or add to sauces or salad dressing.

Curry powder. This complex spice mixture, which contains such ingredients as turmeric, ginger, cumin, and coriander, was created as a shortcut for preparing Indian food. While each of the spices can provide a small metabolic boost on its own, they may burn fat even better when used together. Turmeric itself has a variety of healthful properties, and shows promise as a potent anti-inflammatory agent that can help relieve joint pain and post-exercise muscle soreness.Uses

Add as needed to flavor Indian and South Asian dishes.

Mix with ground beef to spice up burgers or meatloaf.

Add to soups and stews.

Mix with a little olive oil or light mayo as a dressing for chicken or tuna salad.

Ice. Really? Well, yes. Regular old frozen water has several properties that can help you in your fight against excess fat:

When you blend ice into a fruit smoothie or protein shake, you get a thick, creamy consistency with no added fat or calories. And you’re likely to drink it more slowly, if only to avoid brain freeze.

Making your beverages more refreshing encourages you to drink more, which is important when trying to lose weight.

When you drink an ice-cold beverage, your body actually has to expend calories to warm itself up to a normal temperature. Nobody agrees on exactly how much of a calorie-burning effect this has, and it’s probably pretty slight. But every bit helps.

Uses

Blend ice cubes or crushed ice with other ingredients to make thick and creamy protein shakes, fruit smoothies, or Shakeology®. (Check your blender’s instructions to make sure it’s powerful enough to chop ice.)

Add lemon or fresh mint to water, and freeze it in an ice-cube tray. Whenever you want a cold glass of fresh, calorie-free flavored water, just add a few of the cubes

Don’t keep your water ice cold while you’re working out. When it’s time for fast hydration, you’ll want a slightly cool or room-temperature beverage that goes down easy.

By Whitney Provost

Many women believe that the only way to lose weight is to do cardiovascular (aerobic exercise). So they jog or take aerobics classes five times a week. Eventually, though, they notice that while their bodies are a little smaller, there are still a lot of flabby and jiggly bits. Sound familiar? Aerobic exercise is important for good health, but it’s only half of the equation. Keep reading for the other half.

For optimal fitness, longevity, and a lean body, weight training is essential. If you avoid pumping iron because you’re afraid of getting “bulky,” then you’re missing out on one of the best fat-burning methods around.

When you’re weight training, you shouldn’t rely exclusively on the scale to gauge your progress. You can use a body fat tester or a tape measure to track how many inches you’re losing. The size of your body will shrink as you shed fat and build muscle, but your weight may not change as dramatically as you expect. Besides, what’s more important, the number on the scale or how you look in your skinny jeans?

If you’re still not convinced that you need to lift weights, here are 10 reasons why you should reconsider.

Burn more fat. Researchers at Tufts University found that when overweight women lifted heavy weights twice a week, they lost an average of 14.6 pounds of fat and gained 1.4 pounds of muscle. The control group, women who dieted but didn’t lift weights, lost only 9.2 pounds of fat and gained no muscle. When you do an intense weight-training program such as ChaLEAN Extreme®, your metabolism stays elevated and you continue to burn fat for several hours afterward. During regular cardio exercise, you stop burning fat shortly after the workout.

Change your body shape. You may think your genes determine how you look. That’s not necessarily true. Weight training can slim you down, create new curves, and help avoid the “middle-age spread.” Just look at the amazing body transformations of the women who’ve completed P90X®. Dropping only 3 percent of your body fat could translate into a total loss of 3 inches off your hips and thighs. And no, you won’t bulk up—women don’t have enough muscle-building hormones to gain a lot of mass like men do. If you keep your diet clean and create a calorie deficit, you’ll burn fat.

Boost your metabolism. The less muscle you have, the slower your metabolism will be. As women age, they lose muscle at increasing rates, especially after the age of 40. When you diet without doing resistance training, up to 25 percent of the weight loss may be muscle loss. Weight training while dieting can help you preserve and even rebuild muscle fibers. The more lean mass you have, the higher your metabolism will be and the more calories you’ll burn all day long.

Get stronger and more confident. Lifting weights increases functional fitness, which makes everyday tasks such as carrying children, lifting grocery bags, and picking up heavy suitcases much easier. According to the Mayo Clinic, regular weight training can make you 50 percent stronger in 6 months. Being strong is also empowering. Not only does it improve your physical activities, it builds emotional strength by boosting self-esteem and confidence.

Build strong bones. It’s been well documented that women need to do weight-bearing exercise to build and maintain bone mass, and prevent osteoporosis. Just as muscles get stronger and bigger with use, so do bones when they’re made to bear weight. Stronger bones and increased muscle mass also lead to better flexibility and balance, which is especially important for women as they age.

Fight depression. You’ve probably heard that cardio and low-impact exercises such as yoga help alleviate depression, and weight lifting has the same effect. The endorphins that are released during aerobic activities are also present during resistance training. Many women find that regular strength training, in conjunction with psychological treatment, helps lessen their depression symptoms substantially.

Improve sports fitness. You don’t have to be an athlete to get the sports benefit of weight training. Improved muscle mass and strength will help you in all physical activities, whether it’s bicycling with the family, swimming, golfing, or skiing . . . whatever sport you enjoy.

Reduce injuries and arthritis. Weight lifting improves joint stability and builds stronger ligaments and tendons. Training safely and with proper form can help decrease the likelihood of injuries in your daily life. It can also improve physical function in people with arthritis. A study conducted at the University of Wales in Bangor, United Kingdom, found that mildly disabled participants who lifted weights for 12 weeks increased the frequency and intensity at which they could work, with less pain and increased range of movement.

Heart health. More than 480,000 women die from cardiovascular disease each year, making it the number-one killer of women over the age of 25. Most people don’t realize that pumping iron can also keep your heart pumping. Lifting weights increases your “good” (HDL) cholesterol and decreases your “bad” (LDL) cholesterol. It also lowers your blood pressure. The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that people who do 30 minutes of weight lifting each week have a 23 percent reduced risk of developing heart disease compared to those who don’t lift weights.

Defend against diabetes. In addition to keeping your ticker strong, weight training can improve glucose utilization (the way your body processes sugar) by as much as 23 percent. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 16 weeks of strength training can improve glucose metabolism in a way that is comparable to taking diabetes medication. The more lean mass you have, the more efficient your body is at removing glucose from the blood, which can reduce complications from diabetes or even help prevent type 2 diabetes in the first place.

We just started receiving word of a crack down by Mastercard which is resulting in merchant accounts being frozen.

Mastercard is reviewing individual accounts and requesting freezes on some accounts which have forced continuity and “Free – just pay shipping” offers.

I received confirmation from one marketer I know that his account indeed had been frozen as of last night.

Upon hearing the news, I made contact with Jud Smith of PowerPay. He is my provider and also provides accounts to hundreds of MemberGate clients.

He confirmed that Mastercard has requested some accounts be frozen.

Jud is currently recommending the following:

Remove any free trial offersTrial offers in general ($1 with CLEARLY SPELLED OUT TERMS don’t appear to be the issue). It appears that MC is getting a lot of consumer complaints when they signed up for something they thought was totally free only to be billed afterwards.

Make the “fine print” not so fine. Jud is recommending at least 12 point font for your terms explaining that they will be billed again. Don’t make it appear to Mastercard that you are trying to hide that fact.IMPORTANT NOTE: This does not mean all recurring income (ie the membership site model in general) is disallowed. It is a crack down on practices which Mastercard has deemed to be misleading. In particular free offers which were unclear that they would be billed in the future as well as “Free (just pay shipping)” type offers.Another merchant provider is also expressing concern over these issues.

Avoid having an upsell offer which is tied to ANOTHER vendor. Upsells on your own site are okay but don’t send them to a third party to be billed on their end.

Avoid multiple merchant accounts. Mastercard can interpret this as an attempt to manipulate chargeback rates and can close you down completely.

“Free, just pay shipping” or offers that hide the nature of recurring payments are to be avoided as well. This is a still developing issue. If you have comments or more to add, please do it below here. I will update this article as more details come in.

Here’s the email I received by Ryan Lee from one merchant account providers. This is serious business..

-(name withheld) wants to inform everyone of changes expected from the Payment Brands regarding practices that are considered “Brand Damaging”. As you may be aware, both Visa and MasterCard are taking action in response to increases in consumer disputes related to card-not-present and direct response products and services. (name withheld) is endorsing the adoption of Best Practices to support our merchant base in conducting business in a manner that protects both businesses and consumers from fraud. To date no formal announcement has been received, however (name withheld) is issuing this communication now in an effort to educate and assist our agents/merchants in complying with anticipated Payment Brand mandates and actions.

MasterCard has recently warned the Acquiring community that “Negative Option” enrollment will be considered a “Brand Damaging” business practice. “Brand Damaging” is a very broad term and is still being defined, but in light of recent fines to our counterparts, we must be proactive. Indications are that MasterCard will require immediate termination of merchants identified as using this business practice, along with any other practices considered “Brand Damaging”. This follows recent policy changes from Visa regarding descriptor formats and disclosure of corporate entities related to Direct Response offers, with the intent to enforce all chargeback and transaction monitoring programs as defined by the associations.

(name withheld) cannot accept merchant applications for products and/or services employing “Negative Option” enrollment, in addition to the following practices:

Marketing models that employ “Free-Trial”, “Deferred Billing” and/or “Shipping Only”. Customers must be receiving a tangible good or contracted service in exchange for charging of payment cards. Incentivized discount offers are acceptable when the cardholder is receiving something in exchange for payment, however we will be unable to support accounts engaging in hidden or delayed charges and ‘free’ offers that are not truly free.

“Cross-Selling” and “Up-selling” business practices. All sales should be directly between the business entities (merchant) processing the transaction and the cardholder, with cardholder authorization for all purchases.

Per Payment Brand guidelines, the use of multiple merchant accounts, billing descriptors and merchant processors may be viewed as an attempt to avoid chargeback monitoring programs and is prohibited. Perceived non-compliance has led to termination of processing relationships. (name withheld) will review the business consideration for opening multiple merchant accounts to ensure compliance with Payment Brand guidelines.

Transactions generated from internet traffic and all other lead sources must be managed and monitored for potential fraud using an approved system. Third Party service engagement may be a requirement for account approval.

The FTC has recently published guidelines regarding “Negative Option” enrollment programs and is taking a very aggressive position against merchants utilizing/employing this business practice. Recommendations take in part from the FTC’s website may include but are not limited to the following:

Material terms should be disclosed in a clear, concise manner. Unnecessarily long or inconsistent terms are viewed as an attempt to mislead the consumer.

Terms should be disclosed in a conspicuous manner, clearly placed and labeled on websites in a location that indicates the importance and relevance to the transaction. Fonts and colors must be easy to view.

Material terms must be disclosed prior to completion of the transaction and before a financial obligation is incurred by the consumer.

Customers must provide affirmative consent to any offer, examples include a mandatory “I Agree…” statement checkbox, where the customer is acknowledging the Terms and Conditions of the offer and consents to be entered into continuity program as a result of completing the transaction. Pre-checked boxes do not qualify as affirmative consent.

Merchants must not discourage or make difficult in any way the disclosed cancellation procedures and all cancellation requests must be honored in accordance with the stated terms of the transaction.

**END OF LETTER**

Burrito, taco, tamale, quesadilla, churro—you may have indulged in one or several of these Mexican foods. And if you overindulged, those trips to the bathroom won’t let you forget them. But there are also some lesser-known foods that are equally delicious—and, if you eat too much, potentially just as likely to give you what my dad would call “correle porque te alcanza,” or what you know as the runs or your greatgrandfather may know as the trots. Match the following Mexican foods with their description. Buen provecho!

Molotes – Fried maize pancakes. Found in Oaxaca, Mexico, during Guelaguetza (an annual cultural celebration), Easter, and Christmas, molotes are considered a special holiday street food. They are made with fresh masa (cornmeal dough) filled with a chorizo (a pork sausage highly seasoned, especially with chili powder and garlic) and potato mixture. They are then topped with black bean puree and queso fresco (fresh cheese), and garnished with sliced radishes.

Chilaquiles – Tortillas fried in thick chili or green tomato. Chilaquiles are made with corn tortillas cut into quarters. The fried tortilla quarters are topped with either a green or red salsa. And scrambled eggs and pulled chicken are sometimes added to the mix. They are also topped with cheese and/or sour cream, and are commonly served with refried beans. (Recipes can vary slightly by region.) You might be interested—and very happy—to know that chilaquiles are considered a cure for the common hangover. It’s the spiciness in the food that supposedly helps you recover.

Buñuelos – Thinly rolled fried pieces of dough with a sweet topping. Like chilaquile recipes, buñuelo recipes also vary by region; they also vary by country. (The Colombian buñuelo is round, while the Mexican buñuelo is flat.) In Mexico, buñuelos are typically made with thinly rolled pieces of anise-flavored dough. They are topped with a cinnamon and sugar mixture. The buñuelo is a typical Christmastime food, served during posadas (a 9-day celebration with origins in Spain beginning December 16 and ending December 24).

Sopes – Baked cornmeal dough topped with refried beans, onion, and hot sauce. Sopes are a typical Mexican antojito (appetizer). The cornmeal dough is shaped into small bowls for the garnishes and toppings. Sopes are baked on a comal (griddle). Besides refried beans, onion, and hot sauce, toppings also include vegetables, meat, cheese, and cilantro.
